AI agent for coding & automation

Build software.
Automate work.
Across your machines.

Zana works on your projects, connects to your tools and runs autonomous agents—with the models and permissions you choose.

Runs locally. Zana Cloud is optional.

A request you could try

“Find the cause of this failing test, make a focused fix and run the relevant checks.”

  1. Explore the code and the failing behavior
  2. Make a focused change with permitted tools
  3. Review the diff and check results

Choose the model and access profile. Review changes before committing.

Start with a real task. Choose how much Zana may do.

Three ways to start

Give it real work.

A focused change, a recurring job or an incoming notification. Start with the outcome and choose the tools it can use.

01 · Your project

Fix a real issue.

“Find why this test fails, fix the cause and run the relevant checks.”
  1. Explore the code and the failing behavior.
  2. Make a focused change with permitted tools.
  3. Review the diff and verification results.
From investigation to a reviewable change
02 · Recurring work

Set up an autonomous agent.

“Every weekday at 9, check this application's logs and prepare a concise report of anomalies.”
  1. Review its proposed mission, schedule and model.
  2. Approve the exact tools and access it needs.
  3. Follow scheduled runs and their reports.
Runs on its host through the daemon
03 · Incoming events

Let a notification start the work.

“When this project's notification arrives, analyse its payload and update me in this chat.”
  1. Connect an event source through a toolpack.
  2. Subscribe the intended conversation.
  3. Queue the analysis when that chat is idle.
Requires a configured event-source adapter

What Zana can do

Your code, tools
and ongoing work.

Use it interactively in the terminal, give an approved agent a recurring job, or extend it for your own systems.

Work on the code.

Read and search a codebase, trace a problem, make focused file changes and run the relevant checks with the tools you allow.

  • Edit
  • Verify

Create autonomous agents.

Describe recurring work in chat. Zana proposes the mission, schedule, model, tools and limits for your approval. Its daemon runs approved schedules while the terminal is closed and the machine is on.

  • Schedule
  • Tool policy

Connect your tools.

Add MCP servers and custom toolpacks for your systems. Choose the tools available to a chat or autonomous agent. Authorized structured tools can stay enabled with Bash off.

  • MCP
  • Toolpacks
  • Per-agent tools

Carry useful context forward.

Retrieve relevant saved project knowledge, preferences and procedures, with references to their sources. Use native memory or opt into the Mem0 plugin, and add skills for your team's playbooks.

Steer while it works.

Send a follow-up during a turn. Change the access profile or supported reasoning effort without restarting the agent. Review proposed actions and deny them with a reason when approval is required.

  • Live steering
  • Mode & effort
  • Approvals

Act on incoming events.

A configured toolpack can deliver an event and its payload to a subscribed chat. Zana queues a new turn when that session is idle; the notification stays tied to that conversation.

  • Explicit subscription
  • Session-scoped
  • Queued turns

Choose the access profile.

Tool selection and host restrictions still apply in every profile.

Full access
Use enabled tools, including Bash when the host and run allow it.
Standard
Keep authorized structured tools. Block free-form Bash and project scripts.
Supervised
Read automatically. Ask before actions or calls with uncertain effects.

Connect a supported subscription such as ChatGPT / Codex or GitHub Copilot, use API keys, or run local models with Ollama.
Your provider's usage limits and billing apply. Zana is independent and not affiliated with these providers.

Optional · Zana Cloud · private preview

Take the work
across your machines.

Start locally without a Zana account. When you want to coordinate connected Macs and Linux servers, Zana Cloud brings their sessions, autonomous agents and results into one workspace.

Install

Meet you in
the terminal.

Install Zana, open your project, choose a model.

Your first session
v0.95.57
curl -fsSL https://zanaagent.app/install | sh

Requires curl + bash. The installer provisions Bun when needed.

Installs for your user, adds Zana to PATH and starts its background service. What to know before you start ↓

Your first session

Start with a real question.

Run one command to open Zana. If setup is needed, the guided flow helps you connect a provider and choose a model before your first message.

  1. 1

    Open Zana

After installation, open a new terminal and start Zana. You can launch it from a project folder when you have one.

    zana
  2. 2

Follow setup if you need it

If no provider is configured, Zana guides you step by step through connection and model selection. If you're already set up, go straight to chat.

  3. 3

    Start the conversation

Ask a question, work on a project or describe a recurring task you want to automate.

“Help me understand this project and choose a useful first task.”
A few useful details

Before you begin.

Zana is an early-stage project. Interfaces and behavior may change as it develops.

Is Zana free?

Yes. Zana Agent is free for personal and commercial work under its license. Your model provider's billing or subscription terms still apply. Zana Cloud is in private preview.

Do I need Zana Cloud to start?

No. Install Zana and run zana to start locally, without a Zana account. If a provider is not configured, Zana guides you through connection and model selection before you chat. Cloud is optional for managing connected machines and following work from a browser or phone.

How do I limit what an agent can do?

Full access allows enabled tools within the host and run limits. Standard blocks free-form Bash and project scripts while retaining authorized structured tools. Supervised lets declared reads run and asks for exact-call approval of actions or uncertain effects. Select tools, MCP servers and toolpacks for each autonomous agent; Bash access is a separate choice and can be unrestricted when the approved policy permits it. For Bash approvals, review the proposing agent's explanation and expected effects, inspect the complete command, then approve or deny with a reason. Explanations never replace runtime permission checks.

Can I change mode or effort while Zana is working?

Yes. In the TUI, the last mode or supported effort choice applies after three seconds; choosing again resets the delay. Running tools are not interrupted. Effort changes affect the next model request. Host restrictions and pending approvals remain in force.

How do event-triggered chats work?

An event-source toolpack needs an adapter for your service and an explicit subscription in the intended chat. Events carry a payload and queue a new turn when that chat is idle. Registration alone does not subscribe, and an example mentioning email or tickets does not mean a built-in connector is installed. The owner process must be running to receive live events; recovery after downtime depends on the adapter.

What can memory remember?

Zana can retrieve relevant knowledge already saved as memory; it does not guarantee that every conversation is memorized or every detail is recalled. Native memory keeps source-linked local records. Mem0 is an optional, separately installed memory plugin. You can also import supported assistant histories and curate them into useful knowledge.

What does “local” mean here?

Sessions, configuration and native memory live on your machine under ~/.zana-agent/. Remote models receive prompts and relevant context, and connected tools may contact external services. Ollama supports local models. The optional Mem0 plugin uses its configured model and embedding services. Zana Cloud adds a separate, explicit connection.

What does the installer set up?

It downloads the published Zana bundle, provisions Bun if needed, updates your user PATH and starts the background service. No administrator account is required. Open “Read the installer” above to inspect the script and its options before running it.

What should I know about Windows?

Use the PowerShell installer. Windows support has limitations: automatic startup at login is not installed, terminal images fall back to text, and shell and permission behavior differ. Persistent execution is restricted where required permission guarantees are unavailable. Update by rerunning the PowerShell installer.

About Zana

A name from
the Albanian mountains.

In Albanian folklore, Zana e malit is the fairy of the mountains. The name reflects the idea behind Zana: useful help along the way, with boundaries you choose.
